Arsene Wenger says he believes Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to become one of the stand-out English players of his generation.

The 24-year-old has shone in recent times for the Gunners, but also faces an uncertain future as he heads into the final year of his contract, with reports that Chelsea or Liverpool could swoop for him this summer.

Still, Wenger clearly rates the player highly and sung his praises during today’s press conference, tipping him to be one of the top English players in the next few years.

Discussing Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future, the Frenchman also insisted that he hopes to keep the former Southampton youngster for the long term.

‘I want him to stay here for a long time,’ Wenger told reporters.

‘I’m convinced that he will be in the next two or three years the English player everyone looks at.’

Oxlade-Chamberlain has played in a number of different positions for Arsenal, but seemed to find his calling as a wing-back towards the end of last season as Wenger changed to a 3-4-3 formation.

Still, the England international has often said he sees his long-term future in central midfield, which could be a factor in his decision to stall on signing a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger, however, will hope that his big praise of him today could yet persuade him to reject offers from elsewhere and commit his future to Arsenal.
