Serie A giants Inter Milan have opened talks with Arsenal star Shkodran Mustafi over a move to the San Siro, according to reports in Italy.

The German joined the Gunners in a £34million move from Valencia in 2016 but he had a mixed first season at the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger admitted earlier this week that he needed to trim his squad and Gabriel Paulista is set to join Valencia on a £10million deal.

Rob Holding’s emergence pushed Paulista further down the pecking order in north London and the same could be said for Mustafi with Per Mertesacker regaining fitness.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter Milan have made contact with Mustafi over a move to gauge the player’s interest.

Arsenal, though, remain unlikely to give up on Mustafi so soon into his career at the club and are likely to rebuff Inter’s advances.

The Gunners will have 32 first-team members once Paulista’s move to Valencia is finalised and the Gunners have struggled to shift some fringe players.

Mustafi certainly represents more than a squad rotation player and he’s likely to have to personally push for a move to Inter for the move to materialise.
