Jose Mourinho has dismissed talk of Anthony Martial leaving Manchester United this summer by insisting he has ‘faith’ in the striker.

Martial has been linked with a move to Italy with Inter reportedly eager to include the France international in any transfer that brings Ivan Perisic to Old Trafford.

Mourinho left the 21-year-old out of United’s opening day starting eleven, but Martial came on to score his side’s third goal against West Ham.

Martial is currently behind the likes of Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku in the striking pecking order, but Mourinho expects big things from him over the coming season.

‘I have faith in Anthony,’ Mourinho said.

‘Probably the player I was looking at was not a pure winger because I have pure wingers.

‘Probably the player that I was looking for is a player that allows me to play with three at the back and play wing backs.

‘Because – as a pure attacking player – Anthony is a good player.

‘He is one of the players I believe is going to have a better season this season than the previous season.

‘I look at some of my players and I am sure that some players are going to be better. Anthony is that for sure.’

Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to sign a wide player, but the United boss has dismissed the claim his pursuit of Perisic is to replace Martial.

Perisic has never played wing-back in his career and is considered a goalscoring winger that can play on either side.

Martial is often deployed on the flanks by Mourinho who prefers other options as the main forward.

The attacker also provided the assist for United’s fourth goal with Paul Pogba smashing in an effort from long range.

It was an excellent 4-0 victory for United and has confirmed to many the Red Devils will be serious title contenders this season.

United’s win over West Ham was their biggest league win since September 2014.

An away trip to Swansea is next on the agenda for United and the game is the early kick off on Saturday.
