Arsenal fans believe forgotten star Joel Campbell could have a role to play at the Emirates this season after he shared an image of himself apparently returning to the UK.

It comes despite the Costa Rica international having endured a frustrating time as an Arsenal player.

Since signing for the club in 2011 he has been out on five different loans and made just 40 appearances for the Gunners.

His most recent loan was with Sporting Lisbon, where he scored three goals in 28 appearances.

With just a year to run on his Arsenal contract it had been thought Campbell would be sold this summer. However a serious knee injury suffered last month while on international duty looks likely to keep him at the Emirates for the final year of his deal.

He appears to be returning to the UK, with the 25-year-old winger sharing an image of himself aboard a plane.

It triggered Arsenal fans to express a belief he could have a role to play at the club – possible as a wing-back in the system being used by Arsene Wenger this season.

The pleas for Campbell to come back and save Arsenal come after yesterday’s frustrating defeat to Stoke. The Gunners lost 1-0 at the Britannia with a number of crucial decisions failing to go their way.

But any thoughts of Campbell providing a quick-fix must be dismissed with his knee injury expected to keep him sidelined until early 2018.
