Uefa’s updated club co-efficient rankings have highlighted how far English clubs have fallen on the European stage.

The system, which is calculated based on clubs’ performances in European competitions over a five-season period, is arguably the best indicator of the elite teams’ standing against one another.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Real Madrid – back-to-back winners of the Champions League – lead the way with a record number of points.

The top five is rounded out by Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

In the top 10 is just one English side – Chelsea. The reigning Premier League champions have fallen five places following their absence from European competition last season.

It is the first time there has been one English side in the top 10 since English football fully emerged from their European ban due to the Heysel disaster.

Arsenal find themselves 11th, Man City 12th and Manchester United in 15th. Tottenham are 20th and Liverpool 34th.

It is perhaps unsurprising considering many seasons of underachievement in the Champions League from Premier League teams. Last season Leicester went the deepest, reaching the quarter-finals.

Last year there were two English teams in the top 10 of the Uefa club co-efficient and in the few years before that three.

In 2009/10 the co-efficient featured Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in the top five, all behind Barcelona.
