Wayne Rooney stole the headlines with his goalscoring performance for Everton in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad on Monday night.

The 31-year-old, who joined the Toffees on a free transfer earlier this summer, broke the deadlock with a fine finish past Ederson in the 35th minute to put his boyhood club 1-0 in front.

Rooney’s effort meant he became only the second player in Premier League history to score 200 goals, joining Alan Shearer in an elite group.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side built momentum after the break and Rooney cut an increasingly frustrated figure up front for Everton.

City drew level in the 82nd minute as Mason Holgate headed clumsily into the path of Raheem Sterling and the England winger volleyed powerfully past Jordan Pickford.

Just moments before Holgate’s costly error, Rooney could be seen berating the youngster for another poor clearance.

The experienced forward knew exactly what coming if his team-mate made another similar mistake – and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Holgate paid the price.

After the match, Rooney reflected on his goalscoring heroics, telling Sky Sports: ‘I’m sure the red half of Manchester will have enjoyed my goal.’
