Former Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos is back training with his old club seven years after his departure.

But worried Gooners fearing Arsene Wenger is scavenging in the bargain bin looking for an answer to his defensive headaches shouldn’t worry as the Switzerland international is merely building up his fitness ahead of his impending move to Houston Dynamo.

Senderos joined Arsenal from Servette back in 2003 and was originally earmarked as a long-term replacement for Tony Adams and became the first player to inherit the club’s iconic former captain’s No.6 squad number.

The 32-year-old displayed some early promise and even kept Sol Campbell out of the 2005 FA Cup final team which beat Manchester United on penalties, while he also played a prominent role in Arsenal’s run to the Champions League final the following season.

Injuries and a chronic loss of form, however, saw Senderos rendered something of a figure of fun but he has subsequently enjoyed spells at the likes of Fulham, Aston Villa and Rangers.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have begun the season in typically unconvincing style, shipping four goals in their opening two games with a makeshift rearguard looking vulnerable against both Leicester and Stoke.

Arsene Wenger sanctioned the sale of Gabriel Paulista earlier this month, while Kieran Gibbs is the subject of interest from West Brom and Stoke.

Shkodran Mustafi, bought last summer for £35million from Valencia, is also said to be the subject of an impending bid from Inter.
