Arsene Wenger is wrong to think he can turn things around at Arsenal after their dire start to the season, according to Gunners legend Ian Wright.

The French tactician is into his 21st year in charge of Arsenal, but looked to be heading out of the club at the end of last season as he stalled over signing a new contract.

Wenger did eventually put pen to paper on an extension a few days after guiding his side to an FA Cup final victory over Chelsea, but his side have suffered another setback this term.

Arsenal started with an opening day win over Leicester City, but have followed that up with a 1-0 defeat to Stoke City and a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday.

Wright believes it is a sorry state of affairs at the Emirates Stadium and admits he no longer believes Wenger can get Arsenal back to their best, despite once being such an important figure in one of the club’s most successful periods.

‘Watching (Wenger) now is like watching Muhammad Ali vs Larry Holmes. You’re watching Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest ever, get beat up. It was horrible, it was uncomfortable, you don’t want to see that,’ Wright told Sky Sports.

‘This is what is happening with Arsene Wenger. He ain’t got anyone to throw the towel in for him.

‘Genuinely – this is what I believe – he thinks he can turn it around. There is something sad in that because, judging by the way the players performed the other day: no chance.’

Reports have emerged this week that Arsenal’s players are also disillusioned by Wenger’s stale training methods following a worryingly below-par performance at Anfield at the weekend.
