Ross Barkley has rejected the opportunity to join Chelsea after a £35million deal had been agreed.

The Everton midfielder had been the subject of intense interest this summer with an exit from Goodison Park expected.

He has less than 12 months remaining on his contract and had expressed a desire to play elsewhere.

Chelsea and Tottenham were the clubs most consistently linked with the England international, with Arsenal also expressing an interest.

But a move to Chelsea collapsed after Barkley had a change of heart about joining the Premier League champions.

He travelled to Chelsea’s training base in Surrey after a £35m offer was accepted by Everton and even underwent a medical. But during that medical he decided he didn’t want to make the move.

Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri revealed that Barkley will reassess his future during the January transfer window.

A move to Chelsea could happen then.
