Manchester United had a strong summer transfer window but made questionable decisions over signing Victor Lindelof and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, according to Arsenal legend Paul Merson.

The Red Devils spent big once again this year, bringing in Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic alongside the Swedish pair, with Merson praising their business overall.

However, the former Gunners star was unconvinced by Jose Mourinho’s decision to re-sign injured veteran Ibrahimovic after his previous contract had been allowed to expire.

Merson also believes he’s yet to see why Lindelof was brought in in defence, with the former Benfica man yet to make his debut in the Premier League.

Awarding them an ‘A+’ grade on Sky Sports, the pundit said: ‘I’m not convinced by Victor Lindelof at all, but Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic are very, very good signings and that’s why I’m giving them such a high grade.

‘They are two players that they needed and they will make a massive difference to that team. They look like a completely different team with those two players in it and they could be the players to win the Premier League for them.

‘I must admit I’m not convinced by Zlatan Ibrahimovic coming back. They are a completely different outfit this season with pace and power up front and I don’t see how he will fit in.’

Ibrahimovic was United’s top scorer with 28 goals last season, but his campaign ended early due to a cruciate ligament injury, and the player will turn 36 this season.

The Swede was widely expected to leave Old Trafford but continued to train with the team before winning a new deal.
