Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has compared Kylian Mbappe to Brazil icon Pele following the striker’s loan move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
Mbappe remains on Monaco’s books player but will turn out for Ligue 1 rivals PSG for the 2017/18 campaign, with Arsenal’s pursuit of the 18-year-old France sensation in tatters.
It’s understood the Gunners launched a £123million bid for Mbappe back in July and Wenger has hailed the teenager a future great despite missing out on the target.
‘Mbappe could be [the next] Pele. There are no limits to how far he can go,’ 67-year-old told French television show Telefoot on Saturday.
‘I wanted him too, but €180m is too much for us. He has a balanced game for a striker. He scores goals and he gives chances. It’s the quality of great players.’
Wenger also confirmed that Arsenal have tabled a £92m offer for Monaco star Thomas Lemar on deadline day.
He said: ‘€100m (£92m) for Lemar? Yes all true, I wanted him. He decided to stay at Monaco.
‘We will come back for him.’
