Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is an injury concern ahead of this weekend’s clash with Liverpool.

The 31-year-old defender has started all three of City’s opening Premier League clashes off the back of an injury-plagued 2016/17 campaign with Pep Guardiola’s side where he made only 15 appearances in all competitions.

Kompany has consistently struggled with calf problems over the last three seasons and the experienced Belgium international sat out of City’s training session on Wednesday after picking up a knock while on international duty.

Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws claim the club’s medical staff are hopeful Kompany will be fit to play at the Etihad on Saturday but are wary of rushing the centre-back back too quickly.

If Kompany is unavailable to face Liverpool, John Stones is likely to come into Guardiola’s starting XI.

With Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane firing on all cylinders for Liverpool this season, Guardiola will be sweating over Kompany’s fitness.
