Manchester United have deliberately kept the No.7 vacant this season as they target a marquee signing to don the legendary shirt next summer – or perhaps even earlier.

Jose Mourinho made no secret of his desire to add a new winger to his squad during the transfer window, though failed in bids for Ivan Perisic and Gareth Bale.

And a new attacker is still very much on United’s wish list, with the Daily Star claiming the club have set aside £100 million to bring Antoine Griezmann to Manchester in the near future.

The Frenchman had been close to moving to Old Trafford over the summer, though Atletico’s transfer ban meant that the deal never materialised, with Griezmann opting to stay.

But he could be back on the agenda very soon, with United keen to add a massive name worthy of wearing the No.7 jersey.

The likes of George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have all worn it in the past, and it is seen as having massive commercial value.

United are more likely to land Griezmann next summer, though Atletico could be tempted to sell in January if they can successfully prise Diego Costa away from Chelsea, with their transfer ban ending at the turn of the year.

Griezmann is likely to cost a club record fee of around £100m and is their top target for the No.7 shirt, while he is thought to be eager to leave Madrid next summer.

The most recent wearer of the No.7 shirt was Memphis Depay, who endured a rather disappointing career with the Red Devils before moving to French side Lyon last summer.
