Antonio Conte has provided an update on Danny Drinkwater’s fitness ahead of Chelsea’s clashes with Qarabag and Arsenal.

Drinkwater is yet to make an appearance for Chelsea after sustaining a thigh injury while in training with Leicester City before securing a £35million transfer move to Stamford Bridge.

The England midfielder was an unused substitute as the Premier League champions beat Leicester 2-1 on Saturday afternoon but it appears he has picked up a fresh injury to his calf.

‘Danny Drinkwater had a muscular problem in his calf and we are waiting to check the problem but only this, yes,’ Conte said when asked about Chelsea’s injury concerns on Monday.

The Italian insists he will have to rotate his starting XI with a busy September schedule ahead.

Conte stressed: ‘Six games in 21 days is not easy – it’s normal to prepare rotations.

‘I trust all my players in the squad. For this reason there is the necessity to rotate and play game-by-game.’
