Jose Mourinho has been handed a boost ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Basel as Marouane Fellaini returned to training on Monday.

Fellaini, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young were all seen with United’s main group at Carrington before the side’s Champions League opener on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils have a busy September schedule ahead, with games against Everton, Burton, Southampton, CSKA Moscow and Crystal Palace before the month is up.

Fellaini missed United’s 2-2 draw with Stoke after picking up a calf injury, while Rojo, Shaw and Young are yet to appear for Mourinho’s first-team this term.

Asked about Fellaini’s injury on Monday, Mourinho said: ‘He didn’t train yesterday [Sunday], and let’s see if he can today.

‘He’s a very important player for me, much more important than what you can imagine.

‘I feel weaker without Fellaini in my squad, it doesn’t matter if he is on the bench or if he is on the pitch. If his condition improves he will be selected because I need him.

‘But I cannot say at this moment [if he will be available].’
