Davide Zappacosta got off to the perfect start to life at Stamford Bridge after scoring from an unlikely position on his first start in a Chelsea shirt.

The Italian right-back was brought to the club on deadline day in a £22.5million deal and was drafted into the starting XI against Qarabag in Chelsea’s first Champions League game of the season.

After Pedro handed Antonio Conte’s side the lead with a brilliantly curved finish from the edge of the area, Zappacosta got himself on the scoresheet in fine fashion.

The 25-year-old embarked on a marauding run down the right flank before wrapping his foot around the ball with plenty of pace, catching Ibrahim Sevic off guard from 30 yards out.

But did he actually mean to shoot?

The roving full-back spent a long moment looking towards runners in the box and didn’t direct his gaze towards the goalkeeper, which suggests he just mis-hit the cross.

But either way, they all count, and Zappacosta has got off to a flying start at Chelsea!
