Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard hailed Marcus Rashford after the forward scored on his Champions League debut in Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat of Basel.

Rashford started the group stage clash on the bench for the Red Devils but replaced Juan Mata in the 77th minute as Jose Mourinho’s side were 2-0 in front at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old England starlet continued his remarkable run of scoring on United debuts with a well-taken finish in the 84th minute to take his goal tally to three for the season in all competitions.

BT Sport pundit Gerrard compared Rashford’s remarkable ‘character’ to that of Liverpool wonderkid Trent Alexander-Arnold following United’s victory.

‘He’s got a huge future ahead of him,’ Gerrard said.

‘It’s great that he’s English. Not so good that he’s a United player from my point of view.

‘He’s got pace, he’s got everything to his game.

‘He scores goals and we spoke a few weeks ago about Trent Alexander-Arnold having the courage and the character to step up while there’s big names around to take free-kicks and credit to the kid having that bottle.’
