Arsene Wenger insists he ‘expects’ his Arsenal players to register a good performance against Chelsea and believes the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool was due to ‘special circumstances’.

Arsenal bounced back from their hammering at Anfield with a comprehensive win over Bournemouth last weekend.

But Sunday’s clash against the Premier League champions represents a new challenge for Wenger’s men, who have lost their last five fixtures at Stamford Bridge.

When asked if he expects his Arsenal players to get a positive result at Chelsea, Wenger said: ‘Of course, of course.

‘I’m expecting it and I’m anticipating it.

‘I believe that on the day everything went against us and that we were not sharp physically.

‘It [the match against Liverpool] was three days before the end of the transfer window, that some had their heads half in and half out.

‘It was special circumstances a bit, you have to consider that.’
