Ronald Koeman appeared unhappy after Jose Mourinho bizarrely mentioned Everton’s summer spending in Manchester United’s official matchday programme.

Despite the Red Devils splashing out on Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof this summer, Mourinho highlighted that Koeman’s side had shelled out £140million ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

Goals from Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Lukaku and Anthony Martial saw United run out 4-0 winners against the Toffees and Koeman was asked about Mourinho’s comments in the matchday programme after the game.

Mourinho also insinuated that Everton should be targeting a top-four finish in the Premier League as a result of their spending in the summer transfer window.

‘We are up against a team that has spent over £140m in the summer that wants to at least secure a top-four position,’ the Portuguese said.

Koeman suggested that Mourinho should be ‘realistic’ when asked about the comments after the match.

He said: ‘Be realistic. We need time.

‘That’s difficult in football.’
