Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson has admitted he would like the chance to play further forward at some point in his career after making his first start for the club this week.

The 17-year-old winger has shone for the Gunners at youth level, but has so far been asked to play a more defensive role when called into Arsene Wenger’s senior side.

Nelson impressed as a wing-back in pre-season, with Wenger admitting the player’s versatility appeals to him, though it’s clear he sees himself as more of an attacker.

Speaking at the FIFA 18 Launch Party, Nelson told Arsenal Fan TV that it was a pleasure to make his full debut for Arsenal this week and that he hopes there’ll be more appearances to come.

And whilst admitting that he’s happy to put in a shift wherever Wenger decides, Nelson also spoke of his desire to show what he can do in his preferred role.

‘It’s a dream (to make my first start),’ he said. ‘I want to do that all the time. I’m 17 and I’ve always wanted to do that, make my debut at the Emirates.

‘Whatever position I’m put in I think I’ve got to do a job for the team, so that’s my main focus.

‘Then maybe in the future I can move further up the pitch and show everyone what I can do.’

Nelson played 84 minutes in the 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Doncaster Rovers before being replaced by fellow academy starlet Joe Willock.

Arsenal have a proud record of promoting young players under Wenger’s reign, with Hector Bellerin and Alex Iwobi the most successful recent examples.
