Chelsea manager Antonio Conte surprised former Blues defender Mario Melchiot with his ambitious approach to last night’s Champions League game against Atletico Madrid.

The Premier League champions produced a superb display to grab a deserved 2-1 win in the Spanish capital, with Conte’s side dominant for much of the game.

Diego Simeone’s notoriously strong and solid side had no answer to some of Chelsea’s football, and Melchiot admits he was particularly impressed to see the Italian take such an approach in a difficult away game.

Chelsea looked to be heading for a draw after Alvaro Morata cancelled out Antoine Griezmann’s opener, but they kept on going as Michy Batshuayi scored a crucial winner in stoppage time to seal all three points.

‘The performance against Atletico was surprising to me,’ Melchiot told talkSPORT.

‘Conte, with his history of playing in Italy, you think he’d be playing a bit more conservatively, especially away from home.

‘But then going all the way until the end, you could see his passion when they missed a few opportunities.

‘He was slapping the floor because he really wanted to get those three points away from home. That’s why I was really impressed.’
