Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was in no mood for discussing details of a new contract for Jack Wilshere despite praising the midfielder’s performance against BATE Borisov.

The England international stood out in the Gunners’ 4-2 win in Belarus, reminding fans of the immense potential he showed earlier in his career before a series of bad injuries.

Wilshere spent last season on loan at Bournemouth and struggled to impress before returning to Arsenal this summer, though with just a year to run on his contract.

Few would have expected the 25-year-old to have a big role to play in the club’s future, but Wenger has hinted we could still see the best of him at the Emirates Stadium.

‘He had an outstanding first half and he fought until the end,’ Wenger said after the game.

‘He is on a good way back to his best and he showed that tonight.

‘He is at an age where a player usually gets to the best of his career.

‘He has been stopped by a series of injuries, I just pray that he is not hampered any more. He has shown tonight he has not lost his quality.’

However, when pressed on his plans on talks with Wilshere over a new contract, Wenger simply responded: ‘Not tonight.’
