Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has questioned Antonio Conte’s decision to replace Diego Costa with Alvaro Morata.

Costa, 28, completed his move to Atletico Madrid this week after falling out with Conte in the second half of last season.

The Spaniard watched on as his replacement, Morata, spearheaded Chelsea to a 2-1 win against Atletico on Wednesday and Morata’s second half strike was his seventh goal for the Blues.

However, despite agreeing that Costa had to be sold, Zola believes Morata still has it all to prove at Stamford Bridge.

‘I have no doubt that it was right for him [Costa] to go,’ Zola told Sky Sports.

‘He probably has a problem, the team is not made by one player, and I think it’s better for him to go.

‘On the temporal level Morata is not on the same level as Costa. Technically he is a great player, he obviously has a lot of qualities, good in the air, good feet.

‘He has been with Juventus, Real Madrid, big teams, but didn’t play regularly, and I want to find out why. And this year I think I’m going to get the answers.’
