Antonio Conte’s future at Chelsea has been thrust into the spotlight once again with talk that Italy are plotting a sensational move to re-hire him.

The former Juventus boss guided the Azzurri to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 but his replacement Gian Pero Ventura has failed to impress during their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Ventura could only guide Italy to the play-offs, after they finished runners-up to Spain in Group G and now face a winner-takes-all clash to qualify for Russia 2018.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) were seriously disappointed with the manner of Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Spain and a 1-1 draw at home to Macedonia on Monday did little to appease concerns over Ventura’s future.

And members of the FIGC are pushing to reinstate Conte as manager of the national team, according to the Daily Express.

While some within the FIGC remain unhappy about the way Conte left, with his switch to Chelsea confirmed before Euro 2016 had begun, other members are keen to convince the naysayers that he’s the right man to lead them forwards.

Conte won the Premier League in his first season in English football but has admitted he would be keen to return to Italy.

He did not extend his originally penned three-year stay when signing a new contract in the summer and it’s thought he will not stick around in England too much beyond that period of time.
