It was a night to forget for Victor Lindelof after the Manchester United defender gave away a penalty in Sweden’s defeat to Netherlands on Tuesday evening.

Netherlands required a 7-0 victory to secure a World Cup play-off spot ahead of Sweden but could only manage a 2-0 win thanks to Arjen Robben’s double.

After struggling to hold down a regular place under Jose Mourinho since joining from Benfica this summer, Lindelof started in Sweden’s final World Cup group qualifier but the 23-year-old got off to a woeful start by conceding a penalty after just 16 minutes.

As he attempted to hook away a clearance, Lindelof smashed the ball directly onto his right arm, which gave the referee an easy decision to point to the spot.

Robben tucked away the penalty to put Netherlands 1-0 up and managed to net his second of the game five minutes before half time.

But Dick Advocaat’s side were unable to increase their advantage after the break and will now miss the World Cup in Russia next year, while Sweden will be in the play-off draw on October 17.

As for Lindelof, the defender’s error did not escape the attention of Manchester United’s supporters, who are already labelling the Swede as Mourinho’s worst buy at Old Trafford.
