Arsene Wenger appeared to question Joachim Low’s decision to play Shkodran Mustafi in Germany’s meaningless World Cup qualifying match against Azerbaijan.

Germany secured their place in Russia after a 3-1 victory away to Northern Ireland but the reigning world champions still had to face Azerbaijan at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion on Sunday evening.

Low’s men put on a show, storming to a 5-1 victory, but Arsenal defender Mustafi was forced off in the 36th minute with a thigh injury.

Asked about Mustafi on Thursday, Wenger confirmed to the media: ‘We have lost Mustafi for about four to six weeks. I don’t think he will be available before the next international break.

‘Koscielny has a definite final test tomorrow but at the moment he is not available. But he trained on his own and the first signs are positive.

‘If he has no pain on his Achilles tendon he will play.’

Wenger seemed to criticise Low for starting Mustafi against Azerbaijan after Germany had already qualified for the World Cup.

He added: ‘The player I expected to lose the least during the break was Mustafi.

‘I didn’t expect him to play and Germany had already qualified.

‘He didn’t play in their first game and we lost him in the second – we have to cope with that now.’
