Arsene Wenger has dismissed speculation linking former Arsenal star Marc Overmars with a return to the club.

Reports in recent days suggested Overmars was close to becoming Arsenal’s director of football from next season onwards.

Netherlands legend Overmars became a fans’ favourites at Arsenal during his three-year spell at the club and helped the Gunners win the Premier League in 1998.

The 44-year-old is currently director of football at Ajax and Wenger insists there is ‘nothing’ in the speculation linking him with a return to north London.

‘We have been in touch, but not at the moment, no.’

The Gunners have been in fine form in recent weeks and will hope to maintain their run against Marco Silva’s Watford on Saturday.

‘They are a strong side,’ Wenger said of Watford, who are currently eighth in the league having only lost one game this season.
