Troy Deeney believes Mesut Ozil is not ruthless enough in comparison to Arsenal legends of years gone by and is too ‘nonchalant’ about wasting great opportunities.

The Watford striker played an influential role in downing the Gunners at Vicarage Road, scoring a 71st minute penalty to draw the Hornets level after Per Mertesacker had opened the scoring before Tom Cleverley secured all three points with a stoppage time strike.

With Arsene Wenger’s side 1-0 up, second-half substitute Ozil missed a great chance to double Arsenal’s advantage but he could only force a comfortable save from Heurelho Gomes.

Martin Keown slammed the Gunners’ playmaker for not killing the game off and Deeney accused Ozil of being too passive and lacking a clinical edge.

‘I don’t think there are many teams, top teams, that had the chance Ozil had and be so naive, so nonchalant with it,’ he said after Watford climbed to fourth in the table.

‘Wrighty [Ian Wright] doesn’t miss those, Thierry [Henry] doesn’t miss those.

‘It’s ruthlessness. I think it starts from behind them, if they would have missed it when you boys [Martin Keown] were playing, you’d be like “hey, finish that”.

‘He missed it and they were like “oh, we’ll get another one”.

‘Unfortunately this is the Premier League now, and you don’t get another one.’
