Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes Manchester City are the English side most likely to reach the latter stages of the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s outfit have started the season in sensational form, with a 100% record in Europe and just two points dropped in the Premier League.

But it was one specific game which has led ex-Chelsea striker Sutton to believe they will go further than his former team.

‘Man City are the sort of team that will win 4-0 and then lose 5-0 away. But I think they will go furthest – they made a big statement by beating Chelsea and the manner which they beat Chelsea,’ the BT Sport pundit told Metro.co.uk.

Man City won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge at the end of September with a hugely impressive display against the Premier League champions.

Sutton continued: ‘In my mind there were question marks over them defensively last season and had they lost that game to Chelsea then people would be asking questions so I think they made a bit of a statement in that respect.

‘On their day City are up there with the best. But can they show that consistency? They’ve made a great start and the way some of their players are playing you can’t rule them out.

‘City look the side on the eye who look to be the most outstanding but they have a lot questions to answer. When they come up against big guns this season are they going to be able to cope defensively? They have so far in credit to them.’

In looking at the other English sides, Sutton noted the talent in Chelsea’s side, Jose Mourinho’’s tactical nous at Manchester United and said it would be tough for Tottenham to compete despite their strong start. On Liverpool, the former striker backed Jurgen Klopp’s outfit to cause an upset along the way.

‘I love watching Liverpool play. It’s just the same old Liverpool – so exciting to watch going forward but they just have that vulnerability at the back. They can’t win the Champions League but they could cause an upset on the way.’
