Frank Lampard believes Chelsea will only be successful in the 2017/18 season if Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard stay fit and firing.

The Blues great, who won the Champions League, Premier League, League Cup, Europa League and FA Cup during a long and successful spell at Stamford Bridge, was delighted to see the pair in Chelsea’s starting line-up and insists they will both have to play a vital part in any success Antonio Conte’s side enjoy this season.

Indeed, the pair combined well to put Chelsea 2-0 up against Roma on Wednesday night, with Morata’s deflected shot being turned in well by Hazard.

And Lampard hopes they can carry on their fine form throughout the year.

‘ Great news to have Morata fit – hamstrings you expect to be a month but he’s made it in two or so weeks,’ he told BT Sport ahead of the match.

‘I think that combination we saw against Atletico is so important for Chelsea.

‘If they’re going to do anything this year those two up front have to be continuing with that form.’

Former Blues boss Glenn Hoddle agreed with Lampard and thinks Hazard thrives when he’s paired with the Spaniard rather than playing alone.

‘I like Hazard playing in that position, I really do, but when he’s got someone ahead of him,’ Hoddle added.

‘When he hasn’t got anyone ahead of him, he needs someone to play to.

‘When he went off against City – Morata – they put him [Hazard] up there. He needs someone up there so he can come into those pockets – that’s when we see him at his very best.’
