Belgium boss Roberto Martinez believes Charly Musonda has no reason to moan at Chelsea amid speculation Arsenal are interested in landing him.

Last month, Musonda hit out at Chelsea on Instagram over a lack of playing time under Antonio Conte, with the 21-year-old only managing two Carabao Cup appearances this season.

Reports suggest Arsenal are in talks with the Musonda ahead of the January transfer window and the young Belgian has no plans to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

Martinez, who criticised Musonda for snubbing Belgium’s Under-21s in September, thinks the midfielder should have accepted a loan move in the summer.

He told So Foot: ‘We all know his talent, but he’s reached a period in his life where he needs to play.

‘In fact, the club wanted to loan him, but he didn’t want to go because he thought he would be playing. In that case, it’s quite hard to moan about your situation.

‘You need to distinguish two things with young players. Their potential and their performances.’

Martinez took an indirect swipe at Musonda back in September for turning down the chance to represent Belgium U21 side.

He told Belgian outlet DH: ‘Johan [Walem] has one of the most complicated jobs in football.

‘To manage to involve U21s who are very talented and who, sometimes, feel that going there is not rewarding.

‘That’s the truth.’
