Gary Neville accused Marcus Rashford of bottling a chance to give Manchester United the lead against Chelsea in Sunday’s Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.

Much of the talk leading up to the fixture was whether Jose Mourinho would adopt a similarly conservative approach that saw United hold Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield last month.

But both teams appeared intent on attacking and enjoyed threatening spells in front of goal without breaking the deadlock during an eventful first-half.

Chelsea thought they had taken an early lead when Phil Jones volleyed into his own net but Alvaro Morata was adjudged to have shoved the England international in the build-up.

Moments later United should have got their noses in front as Ashley Young delivered an inviting cross to the back post for Marcus Rashford.

The 20-year-old had a free header just yards out but appeared to take his eye of the ball as he anticipated contact with Thibaut Courtois and his effort flew over the bar.

Commentating on Sky Sports, Manchester United legend Neville said: ‘You’ve closed your eyes. If he just concentrates and doesn’t worry about the goalkeeper he scores.

‘I would never have Rashford down as someone who would shirk it but he has there.’

Speaking at half-time, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher added: ‘Centre-forwards do duck out of the way and that’s exactly what Rashford does.

‘He’s more worried about the collision – he’s bottled it really but plenty of forward’s would have done the same.’
