Alexandre Lacazette needs to ask Arsene Wenger why he was left on the bench for Arsenal’s crucial showdown with Manchester City, according to Alan Shearer.

The Frenchman scored Arsenal’s only goal of the game in the second half, but Wenger opted against starting his record-signing against City.

Fans and pundits alike were scratching their heads about the decision with wantaway attacker Alexis Sanchez starting upfront instead.

Shearer was perplexed by the decision and thinks Lacazette needs to confront his manager about dropping him for such a massive game.

‘He left him out at Anfield and again today, against your rivals,’ said on Match of the Day 2.

‘You spend £50million on a striker and think he will make the difference in the big games.

‘He has scored six league goals, more than double anyone else in that Arsenal team.

‘He played Alexis Sanchez today, who doesn’t want to commit himself to the football club, what does that say to Lacazette and his teammates?

‘He has got every right to go and knock on Wenger’s door tomorrow and say: ‘Do you not fancy me or something?”

Wenger acquired Lacazette in the summer after a long-running transfer saga that stretched back several years when the France international was banging in the goals for Lyon.

Lacazette has hit the ground running at the Emirates, scoring six goals, but he has been benched for major league games against Liverpool and City.

‘For me there’s no difference, and each time it’s very hard to decide who starts.’

Olivier Giroud and Lacazette both started on the bench against City on Sunday, the loss leaves Arsenal in sixth place.
