Virgil van Dijk insists he is now happy at Southampton after a difficult summer – but has left the door ajar for a potential future move.

The defender was strongly linked with a switch away from St Mary’s over the summer, with Liverpool in particular and also Chelsea pursuing the Dutchman.

Van Dijk went as far as to submit a transfer request and was ordered to train away from the first team. Despite that, Southampton refused to sell and in recent weeks he’s been back in the Southampton side.

The 26-year-old says he is now happy at Southampton – but will ‘see what happens’ with his future.

‘I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before,’ he’s quoted as saying.

‘I’m giving 100 percent for the club, I work hard every day, I help my team-mates and I’m positive and I want to win every game.

‘I am happy and that’s the most important thing so we will just see what happens.’

Southampton’s first match after the international break is away against Liverpool, a game that will see Van Dijk come up against the side that pushed hard to sign him in the summer.

‘Every game is important and it’s going to be even more important now to get some points and we know we can play very well against everyone,’ Van Dijk added.

‘For now, we need to recharge with some of the players going back to their countries and work hard there as well and come back fit and be ready for Liverpool.’
