Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi has criticised Arsene Wenger’s decision to drop Alexandre Lacazette against Manchester City and says the result may have been different had the Frenchman started.

Lacazette, 26, was dropped for the Gunners’ trip to the Etihad after Wenger opted for a front free of Iwobi, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

Arsenal broke their transfer record to sign Lacazette in the summer but he’s been dropped for games against Man City and was benched for the side’s trip to Liverpool in August.

The Gunners improved once Lacazette was introduced and the Frenchman got the Gunners back into the game with a fine goal in the second half.

And Iwobi has suggested the result may have been different if Wenger had opted to start with Lacazette at the Etihad.

‘We had an extra attacking player going forward but at the end of the day we set up very well to play against City and we were just unfortunate,’ said Iwobi.

‘Maybe if he’d started on the wing it would have been different, but it is what it is.’

Arsenal face north London rivals Tottenham after the international break and need a win to keep pace with Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The Gunners are currently in sixth and three points off fourth.
