Tottenham have been dealt another injury blow ahead of the north London derby after Jan Vertonghen picked up an injury while on international duty with Belgian.

Mauricio Pochettino has a host of injuries to contend with at present, with Hugo Lloris and Toby Alderweireld both missing the weekend win over Crystal Palace with problems picked up against Real Madrid.

In that 1-0 victory over Palace, Harry Winks – who was withdrawn at half-time – and Harry Kane also both suffered injuries that forced them to withdraw from the England squad.

And now Spurs have another injury to deal with after centre-back Vertonghen complained of discomfort in his ankle during training with Belgian this week.

Roberto Martinez confirmed the news at his press conference and says the Tottenham star will play no part in Friday’s friendly against Mexico, and he could now be a doubt to face Arsenal on Saturday November 18 – the first game back after the international break.

‘Jan will not be in the squad tomorrow either, he is suffering from a slight discomfort in his ankle, but that’s nothing serious,’ Martinez explained at his pre-match press conference.

However, unlike compatriot Michy Batshuayi, Vertonghen has not been sent home and there is still hope that he can play on Tuesday against Japan – and thus against Arsenal the following Saturday.
