Jose Mourinho has ordered Manchester United to keep close tabs on Alex Grimaldo’s situation at Benfica, according to reports in Portugal.
Grimaldo was heavily linked with a transfer to United in the summer, as Mourinho hunts for Luke Shaw’s replacement at Old Trafford, but the 22-year-old’s move did not materialise ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.
It’s understood Napoli are also expressing a strong interest in Grimaldo, but Benfica have reportedly turned down an £18million offer for the left-back.
Record suggest the Red Devils remain very keen on Grimaldo and Mourinho has made specific demands regarding the Spain Under-21 international.
It’s claimed Mourinho ‘has given orders to tighten surveillance’ over the youngster with a view to bringing in reinforcements at full-back at the end of the season.
Benfica are holding out for a fee of around £26m for Grimaldo from the Premier League giants so the young Spaniard will not come cheap.
The Red Devils’ current first-choice left-back, Ashley Young, is set to be rewarded with a new contract at the club following a string of fine performances this term.
Young scored an outstanding double in the side’s 4-2 victory over Watford on Tuesday evening.
