Pep Guardiola has escaped punishment for accosting Nathan Redmond after Manchester City’s dramatic win over Southampton and has been cleared to be in the dugout for the clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

The Spaniard grabbed the Southampton man around the neck and appeared to push him in the chest after Raheem Sterling scored a late winner on Wednesday night but the FA decided to take minimal action against him.

Guardiola had been asked for his observations after the clash with the English winger and no touchline ban has been issued against him.

He was reminded of his responsibilities and he will now be in the thick of the action when Jose Mourinho’s United try to cut the gap at the top of the Premier League to eight points.

Guardiola was said to have complimented Redmond but was frustrated over Southampton’s negative tactics in an utterly bizarre incident.

‘I was telling Nathan Redmond how good he is at the end,’ he said after the 2-1 win.

‘Southampton have some super talented players, Redmond is so good one against one.

‘But they didn’t’ want to play, they were time wasting from the ninth minute. I just wanted them to play.’

Redmond confirmed that was the case but insisted he was just following his own manager’s instructions.
