Wayne Rooney has revealed that not only did Dejan Lovren give away a penalty to Everton, but the Liverpool defender assisted him in scoring the high-pressure spot-kick as well.

Liverpool were leading 1-0 in the Merseyside derby and appeared to be in control when Lovren fouled Dominic Calvin-Lewis in the box.

It was a soft penalty, but it was clumsy from Lovren.

Gary Neville on the penalty decision

‘It’s naive from Lovren. I think Calvert-Lewis knew exactly what he was doing and it was a soft penalty. He has played for it, absolutely he has. Lovren is experienced enough to know what is going to happen.’

Rooney was given the responsibility of taking the 77th minute spot-kick and was under huge pressure.

But luckily for the former Manchester United striker, Lovren was on hand to help him out. The Liverpool defender kicked the ball away which gave Rooney some additional time to compose himself.

It clearly helped with Rooney stepping up and confidently smashing the ball down the middle to level the score.

Rooney said: ‘I think Lovren kicked the ball away and I had a bit of time to compose myself and I knew where I was going.

‘I practised penalties yesterday and thankfully I got it right.’

Despite protests from Lovren and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp about the penalty decision, Rooney was convinced it was the right call.

‘It’s a clear penalty, he’s pushed him over and I think the referee’s made a great decision.’
