Ilkay Gundogan has defended Manchester City’s celebrations after the game at Old Trafford that eventually sparked a tunnel brawl.

Jose Mourinho was reportedly enraged to hear loud celebrations coming from the away dressing room and told the City players to show some respect.

A tunnel brawl is thought to have erupted with water and milk dumped on Mourinho and City coach Mikel Areta suffering a nasty cut.

United and City have remained tight lipped about the incident, but Gundogan gave some insight into his team’s thinking after the 2-1 win against their local rivals.

‘I think United had an unbeaten run – I don’t know how many games – here at home,’ he said after the victory.

‘So, yeah, it was about a lot of mentality, about a lot of heart and bravery to do these kind of things.

‘We just felt like that we are the deserved winners of this game and that’s why we were so happy after the final whistle.

Gundogan was the man to tweet the picture which gave the impression the Sky Blues were already celebrating a Premier League title win, even though it is still December.

City are eleven points ahead of second place United after the victory at Old Trafford and many have believe the title race is now over.

Pep Guardiola and Mourinho refused to comment on the brawl on Tuesday in their pre-match press conferences.
