Germany legend Oliver Kahn admits he regrets not joining Manchester United and claims Sir Alex Ferguson is still ‘mad’ he failed to move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils struggled to replace Peter Schmeichel after the the Dane moved on from the club back in 1999, with the likes of Fabien Barthez, Tim Howard and Roy Carroll between the sticks before Edwin van der Sar’s arrival in 2005.

Kahn, who made a record-breaking 557 appearances for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, was firmly on Ferguson’s radar, but the iconic goalkeeper decided against a transfer to United.

‘Sir Alex Ferguson is still mad at me today,’ Kahn told German outlet Bild.

‘He thought that I would move to Manchester United in 2003 or 2004, but I was more interested in trying to define an era at Bayern.

‘Looking back, I should have done it then. It would have been a nice challenge for me.’

‘I just forgot the last two minutes.’
