Ex-Manchester United ace Phil Neville was begging Jose Mourinho to sign Mesut Ozil after the Arsenal star scored a stunning volley against Newcastle.

The Germany international put the Gunners 1-0 up against the Magpies after 25 minutes when he smashed in a glorious effort from just inside the box into the top corner.

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford and Mourinho appeared to make an appeal to his board about signing the playmaker during his press conference on Friday.

Ozil is out of contract at the end of the season but United could bid for him in January to avoid losing the midfielder on the open market in the summer.

And Neville would clearly back United’s move for the German with the former Everton captain tweeting directly after Ozil’s goal.

‘What a goal Mesut Ozil,’ said Neville.

‘Sign him Jose’.

United’s interest in Ozil stems from Mourinho’s anger with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who has been dropped for seven of United’s last eight matchday squads.

The Armenian is said to be furious with Mourinho’s decision and the pair had a bust-up after they disagreed about the playmaker’s performances.
