Arsene Wenger is ready to try and use Manchester City’s interest in Alexis Sanchez to sign defender Vincent Kompany in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Pep Guardiola chased Sanchez for most of the summer, with Arsenal steadfastly refusing to sell the Chilean despite his contract expiring in the summer when he will be available for nothing.

City are expected to reignite their pursuit of Sanchez when the window reopens in just two weeks, with Wenger’s stance on selling him believed to have softened.

The Gunners could now cash in on Sanchez, though the Daily Star report that Wenger will ask for a player in exchange – but not Raheem Sterling!

Arsenal famously requested to have the winger – who has been in sensational form this season – included in a deal for Sanchez, though Guardiola refused to let him leave.

And Wenger’s priorities have now changed, with the Frenchman desperate to boost a back-line that has been hit by several injuries this season.

He has already been linked with a move for Chelsea defender David Luiz, but now Wenger has set his sights on trying to lure City skipper Kompany to north London.

The Belgian is highly rated by Wenger despite his recent campaigns having been derailed by a series of injuries, and he would slot in seamlessly to Arsenal’s new-look back three.

Wenger has been forced to use a number of players out of position at the back this season, with the likes of Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac filling in, while Wenger needs an heir to Per Mertesacker who will hang up his boots at the end of the season.
