Arsenal have scouted Porto star Danilo as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his midfield options in January, according to reports in Portugal.

The Gunners recently appointed former Borussia Dortmund talent spotter Sven Mislentat who has already recommended a number of potential targets, including Wolfsburg’s Ohis Felix Uduokhai and Abodou Diallo of Mainz.

Wenger broke Arsenal’s transfer record in the summer to sign striker Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon but his defence and midfield are in need of reinforcements and the Frenchman looks prepared to resolve those issues having sent a scout to watch Danilo in action during Porto’s 3-1 win over Maritimo at the weekend, according to A Bola.

The 22-year-old, who has earned 27 international caps for Portugal, has a £53million release clause in his contract and would represent a far more expensive option than Sporting midfielder William Carvalho who has again been linked with a move to north London in recent weeks.

A Bola claim Carvalho, who was on the verge of moving to West Ham in the summer, has been offered a lucrative transfer to the Chinese Super League but would prefer a move to he Premier League giants.

Arsenal attempted to solve their long-standing need for a specialist defensive midfielder in the summer of 2016 with the £35m purchase of Grant Xhaka, but the Switzerland international has flattered to deceive, while Francis Coquelin hasn’t started a Premier League game since last April.
