Liverpool smashed their club transfer record to sign Southampton ace Virgil van Dijk in a £75million move yesterday.

The Dutchman was keen on moving to Anfield in the summer but will now join the Reds on January 1st after Southampton finally granted him his wish of moving to Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp met with the defender last summer to discuss a move and the Reds were happy to pay around £60m to get their man.

However, though most people are in agreement that Van Dijk is a good signing, many were shocked at the inflated fee for the former Celtic ace.

Van Dijk’s arrival takes Klopp’s spending at the club to £230m and Manchester United fans couldn’t help but remind the German of his comments on the club’s purchase of Paul Pogba in 2016.

The Red Devils broke the world transfer record to sign the Frenchman and Klopp claimed he wanted to ‘do things differently’ to bring success to Liverpool.

‘If you bring one player in for £100m and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney,’ said Klopp.

‘The day that this is football, I’m not in a job anymore, because the game is about playing together

‘That is how everybody in football understands it. You always want to have the best, but building the group is necessary to be successful.

‘Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players. I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money.’

Liverpool fans were unstandably jubilant about signing the Dutchman but United fans couldn’t help but call Klopp a hypocrite after his comments on Pogba.
