When it’s not your day, it’s not your day and that was certainly the case for Manchester United as they laboured to another draw against Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho’s side missed a number of clear cut opportunities and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty for Maya Yoshida’s handball midway through the first half.

Ultimately, however, United failed to find a way past Alex McCarthy who replaced Fraser Forster in the visitors’ goal and have now gone four games without a win in all competitions.

United thought they’d finally found a scrappy winner in the 82nd minute when Ashley Young’s free kick dropped at the feet of Nemanja Matic. The Serbia international’s shot beat McCarthy with the aid of a deflection and was heading for the far corner until Pogba intervened and opted to poke the ball home from just a yard out.

Pogba wheeled away in celebration but his joy was shortlived when the referee’s assistant correctly ruled the goal out for offside, much to the annoyance of United’s fans…
