Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero wants to leave the club in January in order to secure his place in Argentina’s World Cup squad, according to the Independent.
The 30-year-old has proved an able deputy to David De Gea since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer of 2015 on a free transfer. Romero played a key role in United’s Europa League success last season but has been restricted to just five first team appearances this term.
Defeat in last month’s Carabao Cup quarter final at the hands of Bristol City means the former Sampdoria goalkeeper has been denied the opportunity to feature in a high profile two-legged semi final against Manchester City.
‘Sergio has offers from the Premier League, Argentina and Spain,’ a source close to the player told the Independent.
‘He knows he needs to play and the appropriate people in Manchester are aware too.’
Romero played every game and starred in the penalty shoot out victory over Holland at the 2014 World Cup but his place in this summer’s tournament in Russia is under threat from the likes of Geronimo Rulli and Agustin Marchesin.
United’s current third choice is Joel Pereira who Jose Mourinho singled out for praise last season ahead of his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace.
‘We have a third goalkeeper that I think will be the best Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation so anyone in goal I trust completely,’ said Mourinho.
