How the tables have turned. While Arsenal close in on the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to cushion the blow of losing Alexis Sanchez, Premier League champions Chelsea have been linked with Peter Crouch in order to solve their shortage of goals.

Summer signing Alvaro Morata has fired blanks in nine of his last 11 games, while Antonio Conte’s side required a penalty shootout to edge past Norwich in the FA Cup earlier this week having previously recorded three consecutive 0-0 draws in all competitions for the first time in their history.

Conte has previously identified Andy Carroll as an alternative to Morata but the West Ham target man’s ankle injury appears to have put paid to that move and the Italian has now turned his attentions to Roma’s Edin Dzeko, while Tottenham’s Fernando Llorente is another option currently being explored.

Crouch, 36, would represent perhaps the most bizarre transfer of the entire Premier League era, however, and with Arsenal said to be on the verge of completing a move for the prolific Aubameyang, it was an opportunity to good to miss out on for most Gooners…
