Southampton were knocked out the Carabao Cup by Wolves on Wednesday night.

The Premier League Saints were soundly beaten 2-0 by the Championship high-flyers with Danny Batth and Donovan Wilson getting on the scoresheet in the second round fixture.

Elsewhere, top-flight Newcastle were beaten 3-2 by Championship Nottingham Forest in extra time after the two sides were level after 90 minutes.

Premier League Burnley's 2-0 win over East Lancashire rivals Blackburn, now a League One club, was marred by a fan running onto the pitch to confront the Clarets' team after Jack Cork put them in front.

Shocking images showed the man being surrounded by the Burnley players before being wrestled to the ground by stewards, as the away side booked a spot in Thursday's third round draw.

Although they are bottom of the Premier League, West Ham asserted their dominance over League Two outfit Cheltenham, beating them 2-0 at Whaddon Road.

Huddersfield were another top flight side in action and beat third tier Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham 2-1, while Stoke ran out 4-0 winners over another League One club, Rochdale.
