Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score his first goal of the season to help maintain Manchester United's 100 per cent start.

United looked like they would be frustrated by Craig Shakespeare’s resolute Leicester when Romelu Lukaku missed a penalty.

But they got their rewards when Henrikh Mkhitaryan sent over a corner for Rashford to knock the ball home on 70 minutes.

Marouane Fellani converted fellow sub Jesse Lingard’s ball to seal victory eight minutes from time.

The win maintains United’s perfect start to the campaign and lead at the top of the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho will be pleased with his side’s perseverance and last season they would have drawn this game 0-0.

Juan Mata had a goal disallowed in the first half for a tight offside call before United thought the breakthrough had come when Danny Simpson handled Anthony Martial’s cross, only for Kasper Schmeichel to save Lukaku's effort.

Assist king Mkhitaryan did the business again for United and Rashford capitalised on slack marking by Wilfried Ndidi to tuck home his corner.

Leicester were broken and Lingard set up Fellaini to make it 2-0 on 82 minutes.

Here is how the action unfolded....

Mourinho - It was a solid display

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho felt his side produced a ‘solid’ display and feels his players are motivated to maintain their position at the top of the table.

Mourinho said:

I think we played very well. The result was open at 0-0.

The blue wall was very well organised and I always give credit for that. They defended very well.

After the goal I have to say we were very good.

If I have to choose a word to describe my team, i would have to say “solid”.

The players are good and motivated. They are on the bench waiting for a chance.

We can look into perspective, last season we won against Leicester at home so that doesn’t make a difference but we had too many draws at home last season.

The difference is the quality of our football, we’re playing better today and if we hadn’t won this match I wouldn’t have anyone to blame.

The team is playing very well and I’m very confident. We are comfortable on the ball and dangerous on the counter attack.

But nine points after three matches is nothing different for us because we did that last season.

He (Ibrahimovic) will be back in January.

When the market is open and people are spending money we don’t.

But we get a player who was fundamental for us last season.

He comes to give us extra quality in the second half of the season.

Fellaini - I'm confident of getting the goals

Manchester United substitute Marouane Fellaini is confident he can stay among the goals for the Reds.

Fellaini said: “We created a lot of chances in the first half and it seemed like it was going to be one of those days.

“But the team stuck to the task and thankfully we got the goal.

“When the chances are coming then I’m confident of getting the goals.”

PEEEP: United secure 2-0 victory

All over at Old Trafford.

Manchester United make it three league wins in a row to cement their place at the top of the table.

All credit to Mourinho as both his substitutes got on the scoresheet.

Rashford and Fellaini were among the goals to help United maintain their superb start to the campaign.

GOAL: Manchester United 2-0 Leicester (Fellaini 82)

That should be game, set and match for Manchester United.

Lingard’s cross is diverted past Kasper Schmeichel by Marouane Fellaini.

Mourinho’s substitutions have certainly paid off.

United are heading for their third straight victory.

What an impact from Rashford

Do you think Rio enjoyed that goal?

GOAL: Manchester United 1-0 Leicester (Rashford 69)

Marcus Rashford makes an immediate impact as the deadlock is finally broken.

It has been a long time coming as United have dominated the proceedings.

The United forward was in the right place to fire a volley past Schmeichel.

Can United hold and make it three league wins in a row?

A moment for Schmeichel to remember

Schmeichel saves penalty from Lukaku

Kasper Schmeichel is the Leicester hero following his superb penalty save.

Danny Simpson handled a cross from Anthony Martial.

Referee Michael Oliver had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Romelu Lukaku must have fancied his chances following his superb start to the season.

But United’s big summer signing saw his spot kick well saved by Schmeichel diving away to his right.

His father and United legend Peter would have been proud of that one!

PEEEP - back underway at Old Trafford

We are off and running in the second half.

What has Jose Mourinho said to his players during the half-time interval?

Craig Shakespeare will certainly be wanting more from his players following a poor first half display.

Sarcasm from Mr Lineker?

United dominated possession and it was all one-way traffic at Old Trafford in the first half.

But former England captain and Leicester legend Gary Lineker clearly has other ideas.

‘Manchester United somehow hanging on’

PEEEP: Half-time whistle blows

We are all-square heading into the break at Old Trafford.

The major talking point surrounds Juan Mata’s disallowed effort.

Replays showed the goal should have stood.

United have completely dominated possession but still no breakthrough.

What a strike from Pogba

What a goal that would have been for Paul Pogba.

United’s club record signing took aim from 30-yards with a blistering shot.

Kasper Schmeichel was clearly beaten but the ball flew inches past the post.

So unlucky for Mata

Juan Mata can count himself very unlucky.

Replays showed there was not much in it when he fired the ball into the back of the net.

Is this going to be Leicester’s day?

Usain Bolt in the house

We have an eight time gold medalist in attendance at Old Trafford.

Usain Bolt is clearly enjoying the action among the home support.

Bolt has already met up with Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton.

Can he see his beloved team record all three points?

Slow start from both teams

Not much to report in the opening few minutes.

United are dominating possession but Leicester will clearly want to frustrate the home crowd and break on the counter attack.

Can United find an early breakthrough?

PEEP - We are underway at Old Trafford

Referee Michael Oliver blows his whistle and we are underway.

Sit back folks and enjoy the action.

The players are out for the warm-up.

Jose Mourinho’s side are being put through their final paces.

The atmosphere is building nicely inside Old Trafford - just over ten minutes until the big game gets underway.

Old friend greets the United players

There was a familiar face to greet the United players when they arrived at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand is working for BT ahead of the live televised clash.

The United legend was in the players tunnel as Jose Mourinho and the United stars made their way into the dressing room.

Inside the United dressing room

The shirts are laid out ready for the Man United players.

Paul Pogba will be hoping to maintain his impressive start and produce another influential performance.

Can Romelu Lukaku get among the goals once again?

Just over half an hour until the big kick-off.

Can Leicester cause a big upset?

Leicester certainly know how to upset the big boys.

Manchester United have started the season on fire with eight goals in in their opening two games.

But Leicester are full of confidence following their Premier League win over Brighton last weekend.

Can the likes of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez make it a day to remember for the Midlands club?

Subs: Romero, Darmian, Smalling, Herrera, Fellaini, Lingard, Rashford

Greetings one and all

Afternoon folks, how are we all doing?

Welcome to MirrorFootball’s live coverage of the day’s final Premier League clash which sees Manchester United host Leicester City at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have won their opening two Premier League fixtures 4-0 and will be looking to maintain this fast start against Craig Shakespeare’s side.

Jose Mourinho’s men will be buoyed by the return this week of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who signed a new deal at the club following the serious knee injury which he suffered towards the end of last season.

While the Swede is unlikely to be spotted in a Red Devils shirt in 2017, it has only increased the feel-good factor at the club following their encouraging earlier displays.

While Leicester should provide stiffer opposition than West Ham and Swansea, the home fans will be confident of another positive display.
